I'm just a girl from Birmingham, UK who is a music enthusiast.
I live and breathe music and radio. Having spent four years studying radio and its production, my love for radio has enhanced immensely.
My personal preference of music is R&B and Soul, but this does not limit my versatility by any means.
My desire for music stems from the love I have for instruments, including the human voice, and the beautiful, unique sounds they make. Being able to share that with others through being a DJ and working on radio is an absolute honour.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJING?
I gained an interest in Djing from a young age but didn’t have the courage to take it up as an actual hobby until I was 19. As most DJ’s start off, I became familiar with VirtualDJ and began to learn what music can and cannot work together. It’s not just about what I want to hear, it’s also about what will keep the crowd moving.
At the end of 2013, DJ KA took me under his wing. I learnt through observing how he kept the crowd moving with the music he chose and how he mixed music together. I bought a midi controller and tried it for myself. Through practice, I grasped the skill of mixing, slowly he showed me a few other skills and when he thought I was ready, he asked me to DJ at his Ciroc Fest event with Shooting Star Events in 2014, which really built my confidence.
In addition to this, working alongside names such as Dj M-Bigz and DJ Baxter helped my confidence develop as well as a few skills. Through him, I took part in the 24 hour DJ Marathon (arranged by JustJames formally known as DJ James Levett) in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support and Compton Hospice in 2014. (Which was streamed live on Gorgeous Radio and Gorgeous Xtra).
However, this was just the beginning!
I went on to be the main stage DJ of local city carnivals, becoming a resident for different clubs and making guest appearances at events and weddings.
HAVE YOU EVER RECEIVED ANY SEXIST COMMENTS BEING A FEMALE DJ?
Yes! Being a female DJ is not easy. Receiving feedback like, “You’re a good DJ, for a girl”. My reply is, “I’m glad you think I’m a good DJ. Let me ask you a question. Did you enjoy the night? If the answer is ‘Yes’ then I did my job as DJ. My sex does not limit my skill.”
These kind of remarks only motivate me to become a better DJ.
In 2024, I was told by the Church of England's first black female vicar, Reverend Eve Pitts that "...it's about time we see women like you show not only men but also the world what women can do."
If you haven’t realised, female DJ’s are becoming a big section of the DJ community. (Beyoncé did say that we run the world.)
HOW DID YOU GET INTO RADIO?
The love I have for radio evolved from my morning routine for school. Listening to the radio and having someone make me laugh so I could start my day with a smile on my face. I wanted to do the same for others. So, if I have made someone laugh or smile, I have done a successful job.
Having studied the production of radio and being involved in a variety of radio stations from student radio, commercial and community, in the UK and abroad, I gained management experience as well as advancing as a presenter. Each one has brought me one step closer to fulfilling my dream of being behind a microphone making listeners laugh whilst playing great music on radio. (Hear some shows)
The world of radio is constantly evolving, although creating radio content will always be the same. With the help of Chris Priestman, Jules McCarthy and the late David Corser, my ability to write, produce and edit radio documentaries, dramas and features is like none other.
I find radio such an interesting form a media that I spent time to study and research effective ways to reach people through the use of radio. How attentively people listen to the radio and the importance of advertising.
Spending recent years working as a broadcast engineer for major UK media corporations across national networks, there is never a dull day.
Whoever thought that radio would die when television was introduced was sadly mistaken. It has only made radio stronger.
WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
Having a song in my head at all times guarantees that I cannot stop.
This drive has allowed me to hold residencies across the city of Birmingham I’ve had opportunities to work alongside some rather high end clientele with the privilege of sharing the stage with some rather big names in the UK rap scene.
Now I can say I have met incredible people since becoming a DJ and have had the chance to share my skill and passion for music with many people throughout a variety of events.
Music is and forever will be my love.
